Natural & Organic Certifications

Natural and Organic Skin Care Certification and Labels

Natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free certifications in skincare and cosmetics can serve as a product assurance of their content and environmentally friendly standards.

While some skincare products carry labels claiming their product are 'natural’, ‘organic’, 'botanical’ or ‘against animal testing’, there is no legal definition of these words, so they can be confusing and do not guarantee a product's integrity.

THE LEAPING BUNNY:

The leaping bunny is a rigorous and internationally recognised certification that ensures companies prove that no animal testing is conducted or commissioned for finished products or ingredients in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers. The Leaping bunny is a collective of 8 animal rights organisations in North America and Europe that only certify companies that have a policy not to test their products on animals for any market, including China where animal testing for imported cosmetics is currently required. Products bearing the Leaping Bunny mark are certified ‘cruelty free’ under the internationally-recognised Humane Cosmetics or Humane Household Products Standards.

Where the word Vegan is used the product is expected not to include animal-produced or animal-derived substances, like beeswax. *People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is the largest animal rights organisation in the world.

SOIL ASSOCIATION:

The Soil Association is the UK’s organic skin care assessor, they have very strict health and beauty standards. This certification process carefully checks skincare ingredients to certify that a product has minimum 95% or 70-95% organic ingredients, has used minimal non-organic additives and only those from a restricted list. These must be non-GM and can only be used if the organic version of that ingredient is not yet available, any processed ingredients, are processed by ecologically sound means. Under the Soil Association standards a product can only be called 'organic' in the product name where 95% of the ingredients (excluding water) are organic, whilst products that are 70-95% organic must state the percentage of organic ingredients in the product description and cannot include the word ‘organic’ in the product name.
